Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing National Speech-Language-Hearing Month May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month! This month is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of communication and of the need for early intervention when communication challenges arise, and to recognize those professionals who have dedicated their career to this cause. The awareness month is organized and promoted by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, ASHA, the national credentialing association for professionals such as audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and other speech-language scientists. You may have noticed the name change of the event! The awareness month’s name changed in 2024 after over 50 years since its initiation as “Better Speech and Hearing Month.” The name change to “National Speech-Language-Hearing Month” reflects a commitment to inclusivity and a broader recognition of the full spectrum of the communication needs of the community. It also acknowledges the interconnected nature of speech, language, and hearing and emphasizes promoting access to communication. At MCDHH, we believe that communication is a fundamental and universal right. In Massachusetts alone, there are over 1 million residents who live with acquired hearing losses and face barriers to effective communication every day. We believe that, with early detection and the appropriate support, much can be done to improve the quality of life for most of these individuals, starting with the recognition that they are not alone and that the landscape of supportive services has improved and continues to improve at a rapid pace, and that help – in whatever form is needed – is available. So, as we dive into this month-long celebration, join us spreading awareness, thanking professionals in this field, and advocating for accessible communication for all.
